Clayton Scott was a pioneer pilot
who worked for William Boeing Sr. during the barnstorming days of the early
1920s and became his personal pilot. Mr. Scott (or Scotty to his friends) flew
every imaginable craft from bi-wing float planes to 747s. Revered by his peers,
he navigated all points of the globe. This fitting tribute was designed and
orchestrated by one of Scotty’s biggest fans, pilot Bill Jepson. I worked
closely with all the principles on the project to incorporate and cast the
figure into the complex design and its many elements. I also had the rare
privilege of working with Mr. Scott himself, then 100 years old, to bring
authenticity to his tribute (down to the watch he wore and the hooks for his
boot laces). The sculpture is sited at the south entrance to the newly
renovated Renton Airport renamed in Mr. Scott’s honor.
